Bruno Borralhinho

Portuguese conductor and cellist Bruno Borralhinho is Artistic Director and conductor of  ENSEMBLE MEDITERRAIN and a member of the DRESDEN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA.

He was born in 1982 in Covilhã, Portugal.  He graduated in 2006 from Berlin’s UNIVERSITÄT DER KÜNSTE with both graduate and postgraduate degrees, going on to further study with Norwegian cellist, Truls Mørk and being a member of the masterclasses of Natalia Gutman, Antonio Meneses, Pieter Wispelwey, Anner Bylsma, Jian Wang, Martin Ostertag, Martin Löhr, Márcio Carneiro and Thomas Demenga, among others.

He was the first prize winner of the Julio Cardona International Competition in 1999 and the PORTUGUESE NATIONAL RADIO’s Prémio Jovens Músicos competition in 2001. 

He went on to be a member of the GUSTAV MAHLER YOUTH ORCHESTRA and solo cellist of the JEUNESSES MUSICALES WORLD ORCHESTRA and a member of the ACADEMY OF THE STAATSKAPELLE BERLIN, the resident orchestra of the BERLIN STATE OPERA, and the DEUTSCHES SYMPHONIE ORCHESTER BERLIN.

He has continued to perform regularly as a soloist with orchestra and also in recitals with piano in Portugal, Spain, Germany and Brazil, a recent notable performance in 2014, being the complete Haydn cello suites as both soloist and conductor.

As a sought-after orchestral conductor, Borralhinho’s engagements, in addition to his regular performances conducting ENSEMBLE MEDITERRAIN, include guest appearances with ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA PORTUGUESA, the ORQUESTRA CLÁSSICA DO SUL, the ORQUESTRA CLÁSSICA DO CENTRO, the ORQUESTRA CLÁSSICA DA MADEIRA, the ORQUESTRA DE CÂMARA PORTUGUESA, the FILHARMONIE BOHUSLAVA MARTINU, the ORQUESTRA SINFÔNICA DO PARANÁ in Brazil and the ORQUESTRA SINFÔNICA DE CAMPINAS, the DEUTSCHES KAMMERORCHESTER BERLIN, the BERLINER SYMPHONIKER  and the DRESDNER PHILHARMONIE, conducting such internationally renowned soloists as Camilla Nylund, Tara Erraught, Karolina Gumos, Adriane Queiroz, Lothar Odinius, Peter Bruns and Javier Perianes.

His recordings include conducting the ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA PORTUGUESA in a 2022 NAXOS release entirely dedicated to the Portuguese composer Fernando Lopes-Graça.  In 2018 he recorded the sonatas of Richard Strauss and Zemlinsky as well as Mahler’s songs with pianist Christoph Berner for the German record label ARS and in 2016 NAXOS previously released a CD dedicated to Portuguese music for cello and orchestra, his performance as soloist being accompanied by the ORQUESTRA GULBENKIAN. The album subsequently ranked as the best of 2016 by voters from over 65 countries.  His 2009 double CD entitled PAGINA ESQUECIDA, also dedicated entirely to Portuguese music received international critical acclaim. 

Borralhinho’s conducting engagements, during 2021, included Grieg’s PIANO CONCERTO and the PEER GYNT SUITE with the DRESDNER PHILHARMONIE, recordings for CD, and also programs of Lully, Mozart and Bartok with ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA PORTUGUESA, while with ENSEMBLE MEDITERRAIN he has conducted performances of Haydn’s SEVEN LAST WORDS OF OUR SAVIOUR ON THE CROSS, Mahler’s SYMPHONY NO.1 and the world premiere of his own version for chamber orchestra of de Falla’s THE THREE-CORNERED HAT.

Engagements during 2022 include return invitations to conduct the ORQUESTRA SINFÓNICA PORTUGUESA and ENSEMBLE MEDITERRAIN’s annual series including Bach’s ST. MATTHEW PASSION and concerts featuring soprano, Sarah Maria Sun in the Berio FOLK SONGS and other works.
