Equally at home on the concert platform as in the opera house, Matthias Manasi is currently Music Director of the NICKEL CITY OPERA in Buffalo, New York.
Matthias Manasi studied conducting with the legendary Thomas Ungar at the HOCHSCHULE FÜR MUSIK STUTTGART and with Karl Österreicher in Vienna and was assistant conductor to Heinz Holliger at the RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA STUTTGART, to Miguel Gómez Martínez at the MÜNCHNER RUNDFUNKORCHESTER and to Hilary Griffiths at the HAMBURGER SYMPHONIKER.
From 2010 to 2013, he held the position of Chief Conductor of the ORCHESTRA CAMERATA ITALIANA in Naples and previously was Principal Conductor at the STATE OPERA BRESLAU where he was responsible for productions including EUGENE ONEGIN, FALSTAFF, LA TRAVIATA, GIOVANNA D’ARCO, MACBETH, RIGOLETTO and NABUCCO, LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR and L’ELISIR D’AMORE, DIE FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN and DER ROSENKAVALIER, THE BARBER OF SEVILLE, CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA, I PAGLIACCI, CARMEN and THE PEARLFISHERS SAMSON ET DALILA, LA BOHÈME, PARSIFAL and THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, Penderecki’s PARADISE LOST, Moniuszko’s STRASZNY DWÓR and HALKA, Eötvös’ ANGELS IN AMERICA, Szymanowksi’s KING ROGER and Orefice’s CHOPIN.
Past appointments include holding the position of Music Director of the INTERNATIONAL PUNTA CLASSIC FESTIVAL in Montevideo, Principal Conductor of the ERZGEBIRGISCHE PHILHARMONIE AUE, Principal Conductor of OPERA PASSAU and Principal conductor of the OPERA CONSTANTA.
Matthias Manasi made his opera debut in 1995 conducting UN BALLO IN MASCHERA at the SILESIAN STATE OPERA, returning in 1996 for LA BOHÈME, DON GIOVANNI and DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE.
He has since been engaged for seasons at OPERA HALLE, OPERA LEIPZIG, OPERA BREMEN, STAATSTHEATER BRAUNSCHWEIG, STAATSTHEATER KASSEL, OLDENBURGISCHES STAATSTHEATER, the INTERNATIONAL PUNTA CLASSIC FESTIVAL, OPERA CONSTANTA, SILESIAN STATE THEATRE, STATE OPERA BRESLAU, TEATR WIELKI WARSAW, STATE OPERA POZNAŃ, KIEL OPERA HOUSE, EUTIN FESTIVAL, OPERA KLAGENFURT, KAMMEROPER SCHLOSS RHEINSBERG, and the BELCANTO OPERA FESTIVAL–BAD WILDBAD.

As a passionate advocate for new music, Matthias Manasi is rapidly establishing a reputation as a leading international force in the contemporary and film music world. He conducts live screening performances of films across the world, including the Harry Potter Film Concert Series.
He has also gained international acclaim as a pianist performing in recital and chamber music in Europe, USA and South America. He often plays piano while conducting.
Recent seasons have included making his US opera debut conducting Mozart’s THE IMPRESSARIO with NICKEL CITY OPERA conducting MACBETH, DIE FLEDERMAUS, Elena Langer’s FIGARO GETS A DIVORCE, JENŮFA, Shchedrin’s ANNA KARENINA, and BORIS GODUNOV at OPERA POZNAŃ, Weill’s AUFSTIEG UND FALL DER STADT MAHAGONNY at OPERA HALLE, Wagner’s DAS LIEBESVERBOT at OPERA LEIPZIG, DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER at OPERA BREMEN, and concerts with the BERLINER CAMERATA and the LIEPAJA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA conducting from the piano.
Highlights of the 2017-2018 season included the world premiere of BAD MAN’S LIFE by Marc Aurel Floros at the OPERA FESTIVAL SCHLOSS RHEINSBERG and concert performances with ORQUESTRA SINFONICA DO TEATRO NACIONAL CLAUDIO SANTORO and SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA RIO GRANDE DO NORTE in Brazil, the ORCHESTRA NATIONALA RADIO in Bucharest, the ORCHESTRA SINFONICA DI SAN REMO in Italy, ORQUESTRA FILARMONICA DAS BEIRAS in Portugal, and the VANTAA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA in Helsinki.
2019 will include a new production of LA TRAVIATA for NICKEL CITY OPERA, and performances of THE GYPSY BARON, and a Wagner Gala, both for the ROMANIAN OPERA CRAIOVA and, during 2020, he will appear with the SOUTHERN ARIZONA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA in Tucson.
