The PAUL GRABOWSKY QUARTET is the latest iteration of the ensembles which, starting in 1985 with the PAUL GRABOWSKY TRIO composer and pianist, Paul Grabowsky has formed to perform his innovative and demanding original music and his arrangements of standards and classics of the jazz repertoire.
Paul Grabowsky studied at the JULLIARD SCHOOL in New York, lived in Munich a further six years and taught jazz in St. Gallen, Switzerland. He has played with some of the world’s greatest jazz musicians including Chet Baker and Art Farmer, was awarded a GERMAN RADIO ACADEMY prize for his work with his first trio in Germany and appeared on radio and television throughout Europe. He has won first prize in the Leverkusen EUROPEAN JAZZ COMPETITION. He has performed extensively in Australia and the USA, with the AUSTRALIAN JAZZ ORCHESTRA and, during 1992, was Musical Director of HSV7’s weekly comedy series FAST FORWARD and Music Director and arranger for the national, nightly talk show, TONIGHT LIVE WITH STEVE VIZARD. In both 1988 and 1999 he was voted jazz musician of the year in ROLLING STONE magazine’s critics poll and his work, DISAPPEARING SHORELINE won an APRA award in 1989 for being the most performed jazz competition.
The Paul Grabowsky Trio, originally bringing together drummer, Allan Browne and, later, Niko Schauble, and bass player, Gary Costello, was acclaimed for its recordings which included, on the SPIRAL SCRATCH label, SIX BY THREE which judged JAZZ ALBUM OF THE YEAR in the 1989 Australian ARIA awards, WHEN WORDS FAIL, released during 1995 on the ORIGIN label was awarded an ARIA AWARD in 1996 and THREE in 2000. Its work has met with consistent critical acclaim, James Valentine in ROLLING STONE writing, As fine as anything recorded anywhere… Grabowsky is a vital musical presence in this country. Empathy does not really come close to describing the rapport…As rich and sharp as a Boyd painting… This trio must be in love with one another. Adrian Jackson in the BUSINESS REVIEW WEEKLY has said, The music is appropriately lustrous, Grabowsky is an outstanding pianist, as inventive as he is eloquent. Without doubt this is one of the best Australian jazz recordings…, while Gail Brennan has written in the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, When Grabowsky makes a trio recording of his own, it is full of commitment and integrity. This is a piano trio that can be played beside those of Bill Evans and Paul Bley… Michael Foster, writing in the CANBERRA TIMES simply said, Giving thanks for this magic album.
Paul Grabowsky’s major work, TALES OF TIME & SPACE, on the Warner label, recorded in sessions in New York with Brandford Marsalis on trumpet saw the formation of the PAUL GRABOWSKY QUINTET, for its work in Australia presenting the talents of saxaphonist, Julian Wilson and trumpeter, Scott Tinkler in performances which have included THE FORUM in Melbourne and at CITY RECITAL HALL in Sydney, in the program of the 2007 FESTIVAL OF PERTH and the ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL.
He also wrote for this ensemble when commissioned by the QUEENSLAND BIENNIAL MUSIC FESTIVAL to write a song cycle for vocalist, Katie Noonan, again commercially released on the WARNER label.
With Paul Grabowsky and bass player, Philip Rex, the PAUL GRABOWSKY QUARTET has, in its various iterations, brought together, saxophonist, Jamie Oehlers and drummer, Ken Edie and currently comprises saxophonist, Mirko Guerrini and drummer, Niko Schauble.
