Ukrainian-Australian violinist Markiyan Melnychenko has been described as an artist of patrician sensibility, spectacular technique,and as possessing an extraordinary combination of bravura, brains and elegance. He is in demand as a soloist, chamber musician and pedagogue.
He obtained his Bachelor and Masters of Music degrees at the EASTMAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC in New York under the tutelage of Oleh Krysa where he became the first violinist in over fifty years to be awarded the school’s coveted Artist Certificate. Additional studies have been at the AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC with Alice Waten and William Hennessy, and also with Cyrus Forough.
He is a multiple 1st prize winner of national and international competitions including the MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE’s GREAT ROMANTICS competition and the OLEH KRYSA INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION in Ukraine. He was also awarded the Australian Development Prize from the MICHAEL HILL INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION in 2013 and was a CHURCHILL FELLOWSHIP recipient in 2019.
He has held the position of Lecturer in Violin at the MELBOURNE CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSIC at the UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE from 2016 to 2019 and is currently Principal 1st Violin with the MELBOURNE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA.
Markiyan Melnychenko has performed in New York’s ALICE TULLY HALL at the KENNEDY CENTRE in Washington DC, and has made a number of solo appearances with orchestras including the Tchaikovsky and Schumann violin concertos with the LVIV PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, and Mozart’s VIOLIN CONCERTO NO.4 with the UKRANIAN FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, Mozart’s VIOLIN CONCERTO NO.1 with the KOBE CITY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA and appears regularly as soloist with the MELBOURNE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA and CORPUS MEDICORUM ORCHESTRA and has also been presented by ORCHESTRA VICTORIA. He has been broadcast on ABC CLASSIC FM, 3MBS FM and RADIO NZ, and has commercially released recordings on the TALL POPPIES and NAXOS labels.
Of his work, MODERATO.IN.UA in Ukraine has written, …every phrase charmed with its perfection and ease, with cadenzas of lightness and virtuosity, all without losing the feeling of a delicate but emotional narrative from the beginning to the end of every movement of every work.
In 2013 he was selected to perform at the US Capitol as part of Barack Obama’s Presidential Inauguration.
He has also appeared as concertmaster with the HUNTINGTOWER STRING ORCHESTRA at the MUSIKVEREIN and VIENNA KONZERTHAUS.
Markiyan Melnychenko‘s recent performances have included the 2019 world premiere of Richard Mills’ CONCERTO FOR TWO VIOLINS at the MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE and during 2020, were to have included Tchaikovsky’s VIOLIN CONCERTO with CORPUS MEDICORUM ORCHESTRA and a regional tour and MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE performances of Glazunov’s VIOLIN CONCERTO with the MELBOURNE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA now rescheduled to 2021.
2021 now also includes performances of the Sibelius VIOLIN CONCERTO for the MELBOURNE DIGITAL CONCERT HALL platform and of Vivaldi’s THE FOUR SEASONS with the MELBOURNE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, he makes a return to his regular involvement in MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE’s LOCAL HEROES recital series and appears extensively in chamber music performance in works ranging from the quartet repertoire of Haydn and Beethoven to the sextets of Korngold and Spohr.
