Elizabeth Anderson

andersonElizabeth Anderson has established herself as one of Australia’s busiest, and most sought-after harpsichordists.

Biannual overseas tours have taken her to Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Denmark, The Netherlands and England, to play at festivals, in concert halls, and in recitals in churches including the KAISER FRIEDRICH GEDÄCHTNIS KIRCHE in Berlin, in ST JAMES’S CHURCH, Piccadilly with Melbourne organist, Douglas Lawrence, in the BASILICA DEI FRARI in Venice and for concerts of harpsichord and guitar, and of organ and harpsichord as part of AUSTRALIA WEEK IN ITALY in Vicenza.  She has been soloist in performances mounted by the ORCHESTRA CITTÀ DI VICENZA, of JS Bach’s BRANDENBURG CONCERTO no.5 and has given concerts as part of the GLASGOW MAYFEST, recitals in Aberdeen, Dublin, at the DORNBURG FESTIVAL and the BRANDENBURG FESTIVAL in Germany.

She has toured Japan with organist, Douglas Lawrence, in concerts of music for harpsichord with organ, and has been presented by the HONG KONG PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE

For MUSICA VIVA AUSTRALIA, she has performed works for organ and harpsichord by early English composers.

Elizabeth Anderson has appeared with the STATE ORCHESTRA OF VICTORIA in twelve performances of Frank Martin’s HARPSICHORD CONCERTO as part of THE AUSTRALIAN BALLET‘s season of the ballet, LAS HERMANAS, performances repeated in the AUSTRALIAN BALLET‘s 1996 Sydney and Adelaide seasons with the AUSTRALIAN OPERA & BALLET ORCHESTRA and the ADELAIDE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.  Also with the STATE ORCHESTRA OF VICTORIA she has been soloist in Vivaldi’s THE FOUR SEASONS, performances of which THE AGE critic wrote: Elizabeth Anderson’s stylish playing was a joy throughout.

Her  performances as concerto soloist with the QUEENSLAND PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA saw  THE COURIER-MAIL wrote of her performance: With formidable technique and heaps of vitality Elizabeth Anderson swept through Bach’s Concerto In D Minor… One day Brisbane will get wise and build a suitable hall worthy of the excellent talent manifest at this concert.

She has appeared as concerto soloist with the Koszalin Symphony Orchestra in Poland and with the MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA as soloist in JS Bach’s BRANDENBURG CONCERTO NO3.

She has also appeared as soloist in the De Falla CONCERTO FOR HARPSICHORD at the PORT FAIRY SPING MUSIC FESTIVAL;  of her debut recording on the NAXOS label of this same work, London’s DAILY TELEGRAPH said: Elizabeth Anderson… cool…smoothness and refinement, bringing out an often-overlooked lyrical breadth in the writing., This recording was awarded an Editor’s Choice listing by GRAMAPHONE MAGAZINE.

 In 1993 she first mounted a series of critically acclaimed performances of JS Bach’s GOLDBERG VARIATIONS. She performed this master-work, regarded as being at the peak of the harpsichordist’s repertoire, in concerts during 1994 in Berlin, at the CASTLEMAINE STATE FESTIVAL and played two performances as part of Melbourne’s COLLINS STREET GRAND MUSIC PROMENADE.  Of her performance of this work on CD,  THE ADVERTISER has said: Move records have set a very high standard with their new double disc which features Elizabeth Anderson’s distinctive and very impressive reading of Bach’s magnum opus, and THE AGE wrote: Elizabeth Anderson’s Goldberg Variations are an event.  Like a knowledgeable, enthusiastic guide, Anderson lovingly shepherds the listener across this huge musical canvass.  Bach’s changing moods are well evoked… the final reprise of the aria is full of the tenderness of a lover’s leave-taking.  She has since presented this work in recitals at the CAROUGE SPRING MUSIC FESTIVAL in Geneva.

 Of her performances, during 2010, at DARMSTADT ORGAN SUMMER, the DARMSTÄDTER ECHO wrote, an exceptional artist… The multi-faceted Anderson ascending to ever higher levels of excited and with unbridled virtuosity… While, of her performances of her own program, BIZARRE OR BAROCK in Kassell, during 2012, FANFARE MAGAZINE said, … One hell of a harpsichordist… Mesmerising.  Elizabeth Anderson plays the hottest, hippest harpsichord in the world today.

 2013 included two performances in the program of MONA FOMA in Hobart.

Her recent work included an appearance in the documentary, WRITTEN BY MRS BACH, produced during 2014 and distributed internationally by GLASGOW FILMS.
