Paul Grabowsky was born in Lae, New Guinea in 1958 and grew up in Melbourne. He metriculated, dux of the state of Victoria and graduated from the UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE in 1979. From 1981 he studied at the JULLIARD SCHOOL in New York, lived in Munich a further six years and taught jazz in St. Gallen, Switzerland. He has become one of Australia’s most sought-after composers of fine music and for feature film and television and emjoys an international reputation, through his solo work, his performing with his various ensembles and through his founding of the renowned, AUSTRALIAN ART ORCHESTRA, as a jazz pianist and band leader.
Paul Grabowsky has appeared as concerto soloist with the ADELAIDE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA in performances of JS Bach’s CONCERTO IN D MINOR and Gershwin’s RHAPSODY IN BLUE and with the QUEENSLAND PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, he has accompanied Robyn Archer in her one-woman-show in festival performances in Bogota, in 1997, in the MELBOURNE FESTIVAL, at the 2002 ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL, at the BRISBANE POWERHOUSE and in Zurich, Berlin and New York. He gave solo recitals at the WANGARATTA JAZZ FESTIVAL and the BRISBANE FESTIVAL and in the 2001 QUEENSLAND BIENNIAL and in the 2005 MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL.
During 2011 and 2012 he toured extensively, including giving performances in HAMER HALL in Melbourne and at the SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE, of his major collaborative work with Paul Kelly, MEET ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE AIR.
More recently he has increasingly developed his solo recital performing schedule appearing for RECITALS AUSTRALIA, at the PORT FAIRY SPRING MUSIC FESTIVAL and for the AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC performing such works as his own improvisatory take on JS Bach’s GOLDBERG VARIATIONS and his own solo piano cycles of original works including the release, during 2014 on the ABC label of his latest album entitled, SOLO.
He appeared, with Megan Washington, in the SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE 40th ANNIVERSARY CONCERT during 2013 and performed with her again, with his PAUL GRABOWSKY TRIO, as part of the events of the 2014 G20 SUMMIT in Brisbane.
Engagements during 2014 also included a return to the PORT FAIRY SPRING MUSIC FESTIVAL, a series of performances, including concerts at the MELBOURNE RECITAL CENTRE and the SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE with the FLINDERS QUARTET and a performance in the program of the BALLARAT FESTIVAL OF SLOW MUSIC.
During 2015 he appeared as special guest artist at the TOKYO INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL and with his trio in the NATIONAL GALLERY OF VICTORIA‘s series, gave concerts with Kate Ceberano and released, on the ABC label, his latest CD entitled, PROVENANCE, with Vince Jones, the album winning his sixth ARIA AWARD, for BEST JAZZ ALBUM, in 2016.
2017 includes performances in Italy and at the RED SEA FESTIVAL in Israel, a solo recital in the program of MUSIC BY THE SEA in Brisbane and for the HAWTHORN ARTS CENTRE.
