Pietro De Maria

pietroBorn in Venice in 1967, Pietro de Maria studied piano with Giorgio Vianello and Gino Gorini and, revealing a precocious talent, he won First Prize at the ALFRED CORTOT INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION in Milan at the age of just thirteen.  He graduated from the CONSERVATORIUM OF VENICE and continued his studies with Maria Tipo at the CONSERVATORIUM OF GENEVA where he obtained the PREMIER PRIX DE VIRTUOSITÉ with highest honours, in 1988.

After receiving the Critics Prize at the TCHAIKOVSKY PIANO COMPETITION in Moscow in 1990, Pietro de Maria went on, that same year, to win First Prize in the DINO CIANI-TEATRO LA SCALA INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION in Milan, the GÉZA ANDA COMPETITION in Zurich in 1994 and the MENDELSSOHN AWARD in Hamburg in 1997.

Now an active concert pianist, he is a regular performer at the most important venues and festivals throughout Europe and has played as soloist with its leading orchestras under the batons of such eminent conductors as Roberto Abbado, Umberto Benedetti Michelangeli, Gary Bertini, Myung-Whun Chung, Vladimir Fedosoyev, Daniele Gatti, Alan Gilbert, Eliahu Inbal, Marek Janowski, Ton Koopman, Peter Maag, Ingo Metzmacher, Gianandrea Noseda, Corrado Rovaris, Yutaka Sado and Sándor Végh.  Just since late-2006 his appearances have included Prokoviev’s PIANO CONCERTO NO.3 with the ORQUESTRA SINFONICA BRASILEIRA in Rio de Janeiro and return engagements during 2007 to appear as soloist in the Dvorak CONCERTO IN G MINOR, Beethoven’s TRIPLE CONCERTO IN C MAJOR, on tour in Madrid with the ORCHESTRA DEL TEATRO COMUNALE DI BOLOGNA and Mozart’s CONCERTO IN C MAJOR K467 with the ORQUESTRA FILARMONICA DE LA UNAM in Mexico City along with dozens of solo recital concerts of such repertoire as the Chopin Ballades in Rio de Janeiro and Geneva, a complete Chopin cycle in Turin, Palermo and Venice, Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Piazzolo recitals at the MALTA ARTS FESTIVAL and Chopin recitals in Santiago del Chile.

During 2008 Pietro de Maria played Mozart’s PIANO CONCERTO IN C MAJOR, K467 in Mexico City, appeared as guest artist in the ZURICH CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES and gave recitals in Ford Lauderdale and throughout Italy including Milan, Florence, Turin and Rome.

His engagements during the 2009/2010 season included Saint-Saens’ PIANO CONCERTO NO.2, with conductor Jean Bernard Pommier, with the RTSI ORCHESTRA in Lugano, an Italian tour of the Chopin concertos for the PADUA CHAMBER ORCHESTRA conducted by Alexander Janiczek, Schumann’s CONCERTO OP.54 and Liszt’s TOTENTANZ with the ORCHESTRA NATIONALE BORDEAUX AQUITAINE, conducted by Kwamé Ryan, Chopin’s CONCERTO NO.2 with the CZECH PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA conducted by Ion Marin and solo recitals in the Zurich TONHALLE, Berlin KONZERTHAUS and THEATRE DE L’ATHENEE in Paris, at the NOHANT FESTIVAL and in Beijing and Singappore.

Of his live performances THE BOSTON GLOBE has written, He is a true virtuoso, meaning that he has the pianistic resources to do anything he wants to., while the FRANKFURTER ALLGEMEINE ZEITUNG says, Pietro de Maria played with such incredible lucidity and technically perfect artistry of touch that one was reminded the young Pollini., and the CORRIERE DELLA SERA has described him as, …the best Italian pianist of his generation.

His performance of the complete piano works by Chopin is being recorded on the DECCA label, the first volume being the four BALLADES and IMPROMPTUS 1-4, which was released during 2007.  Of this recording, LA STAMPA has written, …extraordinary technical control…unfailing concentration with which De Maria goes through such poetic density …impressive the clarity of expression., and …an introduction to what promises to be one of the most important interpretations of Chopin in the immediate future., while INTERNATIONAL PIANO magazine has written …the rarest blend of drama and precision… and assured balance of sense and sensitivity.  In essence, these are among the finest of all Chopin discs, excelling recordings by all the most celebrated names in the catalogue.

2012 included a WIGMORE HALL recital in London and a recording of the Chopin MAZURKAS for DECCA and during 2013 he appeared in the FESTIVAL CHOPIN in Paris, at MUSIKERLEBNIS in Munich and at the MIAMI INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL.
