Simon Wallfisch

British/German/Australian baritone Simon Wallfisch is in international demand as a concert and opera singer.  He has lived in Berlin since early 2020.

Born into a family of musicians, he is the son of cellist Raphael and violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch, and the grandson of cellist Anita Lasker and pianist Peter Wallfisch. He studied cello at the ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC, London and played with several orchestras including the ENGLISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, the LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA before concentrating on vocal studies gaining and postgraduate diploma in voice from the ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC in 2006, where he studied with Russell Smythe. He continued his studies at the HANNS EISLER HOCHSCHULE FÜR MUSIK in Berlin in 2006 and 2007 and in Leipzig at the HOCHSCHULE FÜR MUSIK UND THEATER FELIX MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY in 2007-2009, studying with Dr Favaro-Reuter, and in the Liedklasse of Wolfram Rieger. He was subsequently engaged as a member of the INTERNATIONAL OPERA STUDIO at OPERNHAUS ZURICH from 2009 to 2011.

Notable operatic engagements include the role of  Deputato Fiammingo in DON CARLO for the ROYAL OPERA COVENT GARDEN in subsequently postponed performances in 2020, Sancho Pansa in DON QUIJOTE for the SOMMER OPER FESTIVAL SCHLOSS BRITZ in Berlin, Fieramosca in BENVENUTO CELLINI for STAATSOPER NÜRNBERG in 2016, Marcello in LA BOHEME for TEATRO VERDI CASCIANA TERME in Pisa during the same season and ESCAMILLO in Peter Brook’s LA TRAGÉDIE DE CARMEN for NEDERLANDSE REISOPERA during 2013.

Previous roles in the UK include both Pelléas in PELLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE and Albert in WERTHER for ENGLISH TOURING OPERA in 2015.

Wallfisch made his WIGMORE HALL debut in 2017, performing with the NASH ENSEMBLE live on BBC RADIO 3, he has appeared several times at the OXFORD LIEDER FESTIVAL, LONDON SONG FESTIVAL and in Europe including Berlin’s KONZERTHAUS, at the LAEIZHALLE in Hamburg, in the program of the LITOMYSL SMETENA FESTIVAL and the PRAŽSKÉ MÚZY festival in the Czech Republic.

He is amassing a steady output of recordings, including songs by Geoffrey Bush released on the LYRITA label in 2015, Songs by Caplet, Honegger, Milhaud and Ravel on NIMBUS in 2017, and GESÄNGE DES ORIENTS also on NIMBUS in 2018, songs by Thea Musgrave on LYRITA in and songs by Robin Holloway on DELPHIAN both recordings in 2019 and Schumann lieder in 2019 and Brahms lieder in 2020, both recordings on RESONUS and most recently, returning to NIMBUS to record lieder by Kowalski in 2021. 

In 2020 he co-wrote and appeared in a musical comedy based on the life of Irving Berlin and premiered at London’s KINGS PLACE and 2021 has included the UK premiere of Kaminsky’s AS ONE, in the role of Hannah Before, for the LONDON AMERICAN MUSIC FESTIVAL.

2021 also includes appearances as the baritone soloist in Vivaldi’s GLORIA and the Puccini MESSA DI GLORIA with the JUNGES ENSEMBLE BERLIN and KAMMERSYMPHONIE BERLIN, conducted by Vinzenz Weissenburger, at the Berlin KONZERTHAUS and Brahms’ EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM with conductor, Norbert Ochmann.

He returns as soloist, with the JUNGES ENSEMBLE BERLIN, in Reger’s DER EINSIEDLER in 2022.
