Gary Rowley

garyBorn in the UK, Gary Rowley commenced his vocal studies in Tasmania with Penelope Bruce in 1985 and in 1989 completed an arts degree at the VICTORIAN COLLEGE OF THE ARTS studying with Brian Hansford.  He also completed the Young Artist Programs of both the VICTORIA STATE OPERA and OPERA AUSTRALIA and since has worked as a freelance artist.

His engagements for the VICTORIA STATE OPERA included the rôle of Don Basilio in THE BARBER OF SEVILLE, the title rôle in DON PASQUALE, Yakuside in MADAM BUTTERFLY, Haly in THE ITALIAN GIRL IN ALGIERS, Ramphis in AIDA, Nourabad in THE PEARLFISHERS, Leporello in DON GIOVANNI and Roo in SUMMER OF THE SEVENTEENTH DOLL.

He has worked continually for OPERA AUSTRALIA, performing the rôles of Hobson in PETER GRIMES, Nachum in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, the Duke Of Verona in ROMEO & JULIET, Colline in LA BOHEME, Don Magnifico in CENERENTOLA, Bottom in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM including appearing in the company’s season of this opera at the EDINBURGH FESTIVAL, the High Priest Of Dragon in SAMSON ET DALILA, Roo in SUMMER OF THE SEVENTEENTH DOLL and Leporello in DON GIOVANNI.

For OZOPERA he has appeared as Don Basilio in THE BARBER OF SEVILLE, Monterone in RIGOLETTO and appeared as The Trooper in MIDNITE for OZOPERA’s season in the MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL during 2004 and in the 2005 Adelaide FESTIVAL season.

His rôles for the other major national opera companies have included Tiger Brown in THE THREEPENNY OPERA, Major Murgatroyd in PATIENCE and Nourabad in THE PEARLFISHERS all for the WEST AUSTRALIAN OPERA COMPANY, Dulcamara in THE ELIXIR OF LOVE, Don Magnifico in CENERENTOLA, and the Major Domo and Dumas in Andrea Chenier all for OPERA QUEENSLAND.  He has sung the rôle of Eddy in GREEK and Kang in FRESH GHOSTS, both for CHAMBERMADE OPERA and the title rôle in Don Giovanni, Escamillo in CARMEN and the title rôle in FALSTAFF all for MELBOURNE CITY OPERA.

His concert engagements are also extensive and his engagements have included being soloist in Handel’s MESSIAH, SAUL and ISRAEL IN EGYPT, Orff’s CARMINA BURANA, Bruckner’s TE DEUM and MASS IN F MINOR, Dvorak’s STABAT MATER, Beethoven’s

SYMPHONY NO.9, Philip Glass’ SYMPHONY NO.5, Haydn’s HARMONIEMESSE, Verdi’s REQUIEM and Bach’s ST. JOHN PASSION.  He sang the rôle of Der Bauer in Schoenberg’s GURRELIEDER for the PERTH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL, and Westinghouse in TESLA for IHOS OPERA during the TEN DAYS ON THE ISLAND festival in Tasmania.  He performed the rôle of Jinshan in Julian Yu’s THE POSSESSED for CHAMBERMADE OPERA and appeared as a soloist in the SUPERDOME SPECTACULAR for OPERA AUSTRALIA in Sydney.

Of his performances the HERALD SUN has said, Rowley’s emotional understanding and portrayal is immense… He is an amazing voice…with star quality.  Of his portrayal of Don Magnifico in OPERA QUEENSLAND’s 2002 season of CENERENTOLA, OPERA~OPERA reported, Gary Rowley…was a vocal and comic highlight…spendidly ironic…

Gary Rowley appeared in STOPERA’s production of JANE AYRE, during 2005, as Figaro in MELBOURNE CITY OPERA’s THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO and sang the title role in ANU’s production of GIANNI SCHICCHI.

He sang Don Alfonso in VICTORIAN OPERA’s debut season of COSI FAN TUTTE, during 2006 and 2007.

He sang the lead role in the STATE OPERA OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA‘s season of INGKATA as part of the 2008 ADELAIDE FESTIVAL.  Other engagements during 2008 included VICTORIAN OPERA‘s season of THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, the title role in Melbourne Opera‘s The Marriage Of Figaro and Pizzaro in FIDELIO for MELBOURNE CITY OPERA.

During 2009 Gary Rowley appeared as Rembrandt’s Van Rijn in the world premiere season of REMBRANDT’S WIFE for VICTORIAN OPERA as well as appearing, for the same company, as the baritone soloist in CARMINA BURANA and in the roles of The Music Master in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS and Elviro in Handel’s XERXES.  He also appeared as Scarpia in TOSCA for MELBOURNE OPERA, performances of which THEATREPEOPLE, reviewing online said, Gary Rowley uses his deep, sonorous voice and devilish looks to great effect.  Projecting palpable menace whenever he is on stage…top class.

During 2010 he returned to OPERA AUSTRALIA to appear as Frank in the company’s Melbourne season of DIE FLEDERMAUS and sang the role of Charlot in Ibert’s ANGELIQUE for VICTORIAN OPERA. He also appeared in the title role in concert performances of Verdi’s MACBETH for the HEIDELBERG CHORAL SOCIETY, sang Alfio and Tonio in Melbourne Opera’s double-bill of CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA & I PAGLIACCI and Germont in ANDREA CHENIER for MELBOURNE CITY OPERA.

2011 included the role of Superintendant Budd in ALBERT HERRING and three roles in the world premiere production of HOW TO KILL YOUR HUSBAND (AND OTHER HOUSEHOLD HINTS) for VICTORIAN OPERA and appearances as soloist in the Fauré REQUIEM for the AUSTRALIAN BALLET.  He also appeared in the lead baritone role of Hadj in THE PRODUCTION COMPANY’s season of KISMET and gave concerts for OPERA AUSTRALIA.

2012 included the lead baritone role in the ADELAIDE FESTIVAL’s season of Bernstein’s MASS and the role of Harry Or Larry in VICTORIAN OPERA’s production of Elliot Carter’s opera, WHAT NEXT?
