Sorin Coliban

Sorin Coliban made his international debut in the title role of Ruggero Raimondi’s production of DON GIOVANNI, at the MEGARON in Athens, in 1996.

That same year he made his debut, as Alvaro in Verdi’s ALZIRA for the ROYAL OPERA COVENT GARDEN and in following seasons returned to appear as Colline in LA BOHEME, Charles V in DON CARLOS in COVENT GARDEN’s production at the EDINBURGH FESTIVAL, Monterone in RIGOLETTO, Count Capulet in ROMEO & JULIET with Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna, also during this period, appearing in these same roles, in addition to Alidoro in LA CENERENTOLA, for the OPERA NATIONAL DE PARIS, at the Bastille, Palais Garnier and Chatelet.

He has gone on to sing the leading bass and bass-baritone repertoire at such houses as the MONTE CARLO OPERA, STAATSOPER MUNICH, DEUTSCHE OPER AM RHEIN in Dusseldorf and STADTHEATER KLAGENFURT, at the SAN FRANCISCO OPERA, SANTIAGO DE CHILE, and the ISRAELI OPERA in Tel Aviv working regularly under conductors including Franz Welser-Möst, Zubin Mehta, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Kent Nagano, Sir Mark Elder, Richard Bonynge, Sieji Ozawa, Bertrand de Billy, Kirill Petrenko, James Conlon and Sir Charles Mackerras.

In 2004 he took up an eight-year contract with the VIENNA STATE OPERA and VOLKSOPER and since the 2009/2010 European season has been a member of the Ensemble of the VIENNA STATE OPERA performing such roles as Colline, Monterone, the Grand Inquisitor in DON CARLOS,  Fra Melitone in LA FORZA DEL DESTINO and Geronte di Ravoir in MANON LESCAUT,  Landgraf Hermann in TANNHAUSER and Fasolt in DAS RHEINGOLD, Sarastro in THE MAGIC FLUTE, Bartolo in THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO, Basilio in THE BARBER OF SEVILLE Raimondo in LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR and Alexandr Petrovic Gorjancikov in Janacek’s FROM THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD.

His festivals appearances include the Commendatore in DON GIOVANNI at the BRUCKNER FESTSPIEL, Sarastro at the MOZART FESTIVAL LA CORUNA in Spain and, in 2017, Sparafucile in RIGOLETTO at the OPENAIR FESTIVAL ST. MARGARETHEN in Austria, performances televised by Austrian TV ORF3, the title role in Wagner’s THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, for the LUZERNER THEATER, at the LUZERN FESTIVAL and Ramfis in AIDA and the Archbishop in Szymanowski’s KING ROGER both at the BREGENZ FESTIVAL, the latter released on DVD.

Other recordings include, together with Angela Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna and Ruggero Raimondi, a film version of TOSCA for EMI.

Sorin Coliban is also in demand as a concert and oratorio soloist having appeared as the bass soloist in Mahler’s SYMPHONY NO. 8 with the DRESDEN PHILHARMONIA under Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, in Stravinsky’s REQUIEM CANTICLES with the ORCHESTRA DE LA MONNAIE, in Beethoven’s SYMPHONY NO. 9 at the INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL GEORGE ENESCU with Zubin Mehta conducting, in the role of Christus in the ST. JOHN PASSION and in the title role of ELIJAH both with the ROMANIAN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, as Judas and the bass soloist in the ST MATTHEW PASSION with staging by Götz Friedrich, for the NEW ISRAELI OPERA in Tel Aviv, as Bernadino in Berlioz’ BENVENUTO CELLINI with the ROTTERDAM PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA at London’s ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL, and at the CONCERTGEBOUW.  He has also sung the role of Peneios in Richard Strauss’ DAPHNE, under Marek Janowski, with the RSB ORCHESTRA at the BERLIN PHILHARMONIE, Il Frate & Carlo V in DON CARLO for the ROYAL OPERA COVENT GARDEN in the BBC PROMS at the ROYAL ALBERT HALL, live broadcast on BBC 3 and the role of Procda in LES VESPRES SICILIENS at QUEEN ELIZABETH HALL.

Sorin Coliban continues his appearances for the VIENNA STATE OPERA during the 2014/15 season singing Filippo II in DON CARLO, Biterolf in TANNHAUSER, Alidoro in LA CENERENTOLA, Monterone in RIGOLETTO, Surin in THE QUEEN OF SPADES, the Bonze in MADAM BUTTERFLY, the Police Chief in LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK, and Monterone and the Commendatore.

His 2015/2016 season at the VIENNA STATE OPERA included, Fafner in DAS RHEINGOLD and SIEGFRIED, Lamoral in ARABELLA, Count Warting in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, Pietro in SIMONE BOCCANEGRA, and Bartolo in THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO while also appearing as Khan Kontchak in PRINCE IGOR at the VIENNA VOLKSOPER.

He also appeared as Fasolt in performances of DAS RHEINGOLD at the PALACE OF ARTS, in Budapest.

2016/2017 saw him sing Ramfis at the VIENNA STATE OPERA, Hobson in PETER GRIMES and give further performances of Fafner, Count Warting, Sarastro and The Commendatore.

During the same season he also gave performances of Fafner, with the ODENSE SYMFONIORKESTER with conductor, Alexander Vedernikov.

At the VIENNA STATE OPERA, during the current 2017/2018 he has appeared as Baron Douphol in LA TRAVIATA, Basilio in THE BARBER OF SEVILLE, as Erste Nazarener in SALOME, as the Bonze and reprised his performances of Count Warting, and the Comnmendatore.

Concert engagements during the current season have included the bass solos in Verdi’s REQUIEM with the WIENER MÄNNERGESANG VEREIN and the GYÖR PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA in Vienna.

 Sorin Coliban’s forthcoming engagements, during 2018, include the role of Abimelech in SAMSON & DELILAH at the VIENNA STATE OPERA.
