Diana Higbee has become one of the most regarded of the new generation of Mozart singers. Born of American and New Zealander parents, she holds both American and New Zealand citizenship and currently resides in Le Mans, south-west of Paris. She has been the winner of the YOUNG TALENT OF THE YEAR and also of the audience vote of the French JEUNES TALENTS MUSIQUES AU CŒUR television program, was the Parisian recipient of the RICHARD WAGNER STIPEND for 2006 and is a graduate with a Master’s Degree from the MANHATTAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC where she studied with Ted Puffer and Monica Harte. She currently works with Christa Ludwig, Viorica Cortez and Olivier Reboul.
Diana Higbee’s rise to emergent international stardom has been rapid. During the 2012/2013 European season she recorded Donna Anna in DON GIOVANNI on DVD with the IDÉALE AUDIENCE label at the DIJON OPERA, staged by Jean-Yves Ruf with the CHAMBER ORCHESTRA OF EUROPE, the performance broadcast live on MEDICI TV and FRANCE 3 and FORUM OPERA writing, Diana Higbee’s Donna Anna is simply unreal with vocal perfection and ease; an exceptional art of singing. She also sang the same role at the ANTIBES FESTIVAL with the ORCHESTRE DE L’OPÉRA DE TOULON as well as at the JOURNÉES LYRIQUES DE CHARTRES with the ORCHESTRE PROMÉTHÉE conducted by Pierre-Michel Durand.
During the same season she gave further performances of Donna Anna at the LACOSTE FESTIVAL staged by Jean-François Vinciguerra and with costumes created by Pierre Cardin, OPERA MAGAZINE writing of these performances, …Diana Higbee pulls off a Donna Anna which is elegant and precise, with an instrumental-like quality of line which Mozart imperatively needs.
The 2012/2013 season also included her first performances as Frasquita at the OPERA DE TOULON and Mélisande in PELLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE at the BERGEN OPERA in Norway with the OXALYS ENSEMBLE and Marit Strindlund conducting and performances of the same role in the Wouter van Looy production at the VLAAMSE OPERA in Antwerp. On the concert stage, she replaced Sonya Yoncheva at very short notice in the Pergolesi STABAT MATER at NOTRE DAME DE ROCAMADOUR with Carlos Mena, countertenor, LE FIGARO writing of this performance, bewitching and remarkable, filling the space effortlessly.
In Vienna she appeared as Le Femme in Milaud’s LE PAUVRE MATELOT and as Yvonne in George Antheil’s VENUS IN AFRICA at the WIENER KAMMEROPER conducted by Daniel Hoyem-Cavazza and staged by Giorgio Madia while in Paris, she sang the title role of the world premiere performances of Martin Besançon’s EMILY DICKINSON conducted by Philippe Barbey-Lallia and the title role of THAÏS for the Massenet Centenary. In addition, she gave performances of Rosalinda in DIE FLEDERMAUS on tour throughout France conducted by Amaury du Closel.
On the concert platform Diana Higbee appears regularly in concerts at such leading venues as the VIENNA MUSIKVEREIN and the STADTHALLE BAYREUTH and in the programs of the CIRCULO DE BELLAS ARTES in Madrid, the GULBENKIAN FOUNDATION and the Aix-en-Provence, Lourdes, Ambronay, and Utrecht festivals, most recently appearing at the ANNECY CLASSIC FESTIVAL in the Brahms REQUIEM conducted by Patrick Marco with the ACCENTUS CHORUS, in the Mozart REQUIEM with Pierre-Michel Durand and the CHOEUR DE L’ORCHESTRE DE PARIS and as soprano soloist in LE ROI DAVID by Honnegger in front of 10.000 people under the baton of Peter Bannister at the PALAIS OMNISPORT DE BERCY.
She works with conductors including Giuliano Carella, Paul McCreesh, Nicolaus Richter, Kenneth Weiss, Dominique Daigremont, Benjamin Pionnier, Bernhard Klebel and Pierre-Michel Durand and of her work, CLASSIQUE INFO has said, An extraordinary presence, a voice like a thread of silk, a rare perfection and absolutely magnificent., while the NORDBAYERISCHER KURIER has written, …a voice full of agility, brilliance and a wonderful grace.
During the 2013/2014 European season, Diana Higbee appeared in the title role of Donizetti’s Rita at the FESTSPIELE AUF BURG GOLLING in Salzburg, as Micaëla in CARMEN for VANEMUINE THEATER in Estonia, appeared as soloist in Mozart concert arias on tour with the ORCHESTRE JEAN-WALTER AUDOLI, returned to the role of Melisande in Sweden with OXALYS again conducted by Marit Strindlund, gave the world premiere performances of LA BELLE AGAMICE, a song cycle for soprano and orchestra composed especially for her by Olivier Calmel with text by Pierre-Henri Loÿs and appeared as soloist in performances of the Boccherini STABAT MATER with her own ENSEMBLE POCO A POCO. Other concert engagements included performances as soloist in both the Pergolesi and Poulenc STABAT MATER and in Mozart’s REQUIEM.
Other recent performances include the role of Isoline in Satie’s GENEVIEVE DE BRABANT for OPERA NATIONAL DE MONTPELLIER, for which she was also engaged in the 2016/2017 season, for OPERA DE NANCY.
In the same season she also appeared as Micaela in CARMEN for TEATER VANEMUINE in Estonia and Euridice in ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD for ESTIVALES EN PUISAYE in France.
