Regarded as one of Australia’s most versatile lyric tenors, Henry Choo was raised in Melbourne, originally trained as a pianist, violinist and boy soprano, is a graduate of the AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC and an alumnus of both the Young Artist Program of OPERA QUEENSLAND and the Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artist Development Program of OPERA AUSTRALIA. He has received multiple Green Room Award nominations, most recently for his portrayal of Robert Leicester in MELBOURNE OPERA‘s production of MARIA STUARDA.
He made his career debut in the role of Ernesto in OPERA QUEENSLAND‘s production of DON PASQUALE, and his debut with OPERA AUSTRALIA as the Italian Singer in DER ROSENKAVALIER.

His roles for other companies include Cassio in OTELLO, Don Ottavio in DON GIOVANNI and Nadir in LES PÃŠCHEURS DE PERLES for WEST AUSTRALIAN OPERA, Almaviva in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA for STATE OPERA SOUTH AUSTRALIA, Robert Leicester in MARIA STUARDA, the title role of ROBERTO DEVEREUX and the Sailor in TRISTAN UND ISOLDE for MELBOURNE OPERA, Ferrando in COSI FAN TUTTE for HARBOUR CITY OPERA, Percy in ANNA BOLENA and Bacchus in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS for OPERABOX, Ramiro in LA CENERENTOLA, Bacchus in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS for CITIOPERA and Borsa inÂ RIGOLETTO for the MACAU INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL.
He also created the roles of Aldo/Nigel Clunes in BLISS at the EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL for OPERA AUSTRALIA.
On the concert platform he has performed with the WORLD PEACE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, as soloist in Beethoven’s SYMPHONY NO.9, under the baton of Edo de Waart, with the HONG KONG PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, and has appeared as soloist with the NEW ZEALAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, AUCKLAND PHILHARMONIA, ORCHESTRA WELLINGTON, CHRISTCHURCH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, with the Melbourne, Sydney, Queensland, Tasmanian, West Australian and Darwin Symphony Orchestras, ORCHESTRA VICTORIA, the AUSTRALIAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA and THE AUSTRALIA ENSEMBLE. He has appeared as soloist in such works as Mahler’s SYMPHONY NO 8, Mozart’s REQUIEM, Handel’s MESSIAH, Beethoven’s SYMPHONY NO. 9, Bach’s ST JOHN PASSION, ST MATTHEW PASSION and THE CHRISTMAS ORATORIO with such organisations as BACH MUSICA in New Zealand and the MELBOURNE BACH CHOIR and in Mendelssohn’s ELIJAH with the AUCKLAND PHILHARMONIA CHOIR and the HEIDELBERG CHORAL SOCIETY.
2014 saw him perform the role of Cassio in OTELLO for WEST AUSTRALIAN OPERA, the Sailor/Shepherd in TRISTAN UND ISOLDE for the AUCKLAND PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA, appear as soloist in Haydn’s HARMONIEMESSE with the TASMANIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, CARMINA BURANA with ORCHESTRA WELLINGTON, and MESSIAH with QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, the AUCKLAND CHORAL SOCIETY and the COLLEGIUM SYMPHONIC CHORUS in Perth.
2015 included the role of Percy in ANNA BOLENA and Bacchus in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, both for OPERABOX in Western Australia, give the premiere, with the QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, of Gordon Hamilton’s THE TRILLION SOULS, appear as soloist in Beethoven’s CHORAL FANTAS with the MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, Bach’s MAGNIFICAT with CHRISTCHURCH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, appear as soloist in CHORUSOZ with the SYDNEY PHILHARMONIA CHOIRS and in Bach’s CHRISTMAS ORATORIO with BACH MUSICA NZ while 2016 included ST. MATTHEW PASSION for the MELBOURNE BACH CHOIR and guest appearances with DARWIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, and ORCHESTRA WELLINGTON.
His performances, during 2018, included the SAILOR in TRISTAN UND ISOLDE for MELBOURNE OPERA and in 2019, he appeared as guest soloist in A BAROQUE EASTER with the AUCKLAND PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA.
Engagements, during 2020, originally include Beethoven’s SYMPHONY NO 9 with the ADELAIDE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, subsequently postponed again in 2021, and the role of Ruggero in the NATIONAL OPERA‘s inaugural production of LA RONDINE and originally included the role of Remendadoin the VICTORIA CHORALE‘s staged-concert version of CARMEN all now rescheduled to 2021.
2021 has also included his appearance as tenor soloist in Tippett’s A CHILD OF OUR TIME for the ADELAIDE FESTIVAL, of which IN DAILY ADELAIDE wrote, Henry Choo was superb. In his solo I have no money for my bread, he generated true fervour and was powerfully communicative., while LIMELIGHT said, Henry Choo was in truly beautiful voice, anguished and yearning in turn as the central protagonist of the piece.
