David Wakeham

David Wakeham has established a worldwide reputation giving critically acclaimed performances at LA SCALA MILAN, THEATER AN DER WIEN, the KOMISCHE OPER BERLIN, OPER LEIPZIG, the BAYERISCHE STAATSOPER, STAATSOPER STUTTGART, OPER BONN, and OPERA AUSTRALIA and has worked regularly with renowned conductors and stage directors including, amongst others, Sir Andrew Davis, Mikhail Jurowski, Vladimir Jurowski, Carlo Felice Cillario, Sir Mark Elder, Kirill Petrenko, Gabriele Ferro, Francesco Corti, Yakov Kreizberg, Franz Welser-Möst, Achim Freier, Andreas Homoki, Pet Halmen, Grisha Asagaroff, and Sir David Pountney. 

Originally as a member of the ZÜRICH OPERNSTUDIO he made his debut at the OPERNHAUS ZÜRICH in roles from FEDORA, RIGOLETTO, MACBETH and DON CARLO under conductors including Nello Santi, Alun Franci, Manfred Honeck, and Adam Fischer. 

He went on to appear in the title roles of FALSTAFF, MACBETH, and RIGOLETTO for the KOMISCHE OPER in Berlin,  as Il Conte di Luna in IL TROVATORE  initially at MAINFRANKENTHEATER WÜRZBURG then returning to the same role, and also to Jochanaan in SALOME at the DEUTSCHE OPER AM RHEIN, singing Jochanaan also in Düsseldorf and at STAATSOPER STUTTGART. He sang both Archbishop Hidulfus in Schumann’s GENOVEVA and Germont in LA TRAVIATA at OPER LEIPZIG and Germont also for STADTTHEATER BONN, in Freiburg and for OPERA AUSTRALIA, Der Vater in HANSEL UND GRETEL and the Doctor in MACBETH at the BAYERISCHE STAATSOPER,  Alfio in CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA and Tonio in I PAGLIACCI, also Der Graf in CAPRICCIO and Rodrigo in DON CARLO all for OPERA DE NANTES, the title role of NABUCCO at STADTTHEATER BERN also for OPERA HOLLAND PARK in London, WESTERN AUSTRALIA OPERA COMPANY and the GREEK NATIONAL OPERA in Athens, FALSTAFF for STAATSTHEATER SCHWERIN, and Zurga in LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES at OPERA QUEENSLAND in Brisbane.

His Germont in LA TRAVIATA at Leipzig, Macbeth at KOMISCHE OPER BERLIN, Nabucco in Athens, Falstaff at the STAATSTHEATER SCHWERIN, and Der Graf in CAPRICCIO at Nantes all live recorded as well as performances of Orest in ELEKTRA with the HONG KONG PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA with conductor, Edo de Waart and Dame Gwyneth Jones and Chris Merritt.

For LA SCALA MILAN he has appeared as the Forester in THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN, the company’s first production of a Czech opera in the original language and recorded live by RAI 1 for national broadcast in Italy.

His performances of Kurwenal in TRISTAN AND ISOLDE include at BÜHNEN HALLE opposite Dame Anne Evans and also at MAINFRANKENTHEATER WÜRZBURG, at the QUEENSLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL in Brisbane and for the WEST AUSTRALIAN OPERA.

He made his debut at the STAATSOPER BERLIN as Der Pfleger des Orest in ELEKTRA during 2022, performances he continued in the 2023/2024 Season. He will return to the STAATSOPER BERLIN for the same role in 2025, where he is also engaged to sing Nourabad in LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES during the same season.

Wakeham’s concert performances include Zemlinsky’s LYRIC SYMPHONY with conductor, Lothar Zagrosek, in Brussels, Antwerp and Stuttgart, Mahler’s SYMPHONY NO.8 and LIEDER EINES FAHRENDE GESELLEN with the ISRAEL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and performances of the Fauré REQUIEM at CARNEGIE HALL and Brahms’ EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM in Egypt.

With the QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA his performances have been recorded and widely broadcast by the AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION and include the Australian premiere performances of Zimmerman’s ICH WANDTE MICH UND SAH AN ALLES UNRECHT, DAS GESCHAH UNTER DER SONNE, appearances as soloist in Beethoven’s SYMPHONY NO.9, BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE , also the Brahms EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM and in the world premiere of Gordon Hamilton’s THE TRILLION SOULS, the baritone solo role especially written for Wakeham, while with the QUEENSLAND PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA his appearances have included the Verdi REQUIEM and THE DREAM OF GERONTIUS.
