Zara Barrett has been a member of the post-graduate course at London’s NATIONAL OPERA STUDIO, of the Young Artists’ programs of GLIMMERGLASS OPERA, the OBERLIN CONSERVATORIUM and the PITTSBURGH OPERA CENTRE and a regional finalist in the METROPOLITAN OPERA AWARDS and a winner of the OPERA FOUNDATION SHELL COVENT GARDEN AWARD.

Her early operatic engagements included Mimi in LA BOHEME for the NATIONAL OPERA in Welington and for GLIMMERGLASS OPERA, Donna Anna in DON GIOVANNI, Amelia in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, Vitellia in LA CLEMENZA DI TITO and Musetta in LA BOHEME for the PITTSBURGH OPERA CENTRE.

She has subsequently been regularly engaged for such roles as Abigaille in NABUCCO, Minnie in LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST and for the title roles of TURANDOT and AIDA by such companies as the STATE OPERA OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA, OPERA QUEENSLAND and OPERA AUSTRALIA.

Other roles for OPERA AUSTRALIA have included Judith in BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE.

Most recently she has appeared as Brunnhilde in MELBOURNE OPERA’s 2022 season of DIE WALKÜRE, a role to which she returned in SIEGFRIED, DIE WALKÜRE and GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG in the company’s season of the complete cycle of DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN in 2023.

Past engagements by MELBOURNE OPERA also include the roles of Lady Macbeth in MACBETH  and Senta in DIE FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER.

For AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL PRODUCTIONS she appeared as Turandot, Aida and Countess Almaviva in LA NOZZE DI FIGARO in three separate extended tours of China.

Barrett is also a widely experienced concert and oratorio singer having appeared as soloist in Beethoven’s MASS IN C for 3MBS FM and  in such works as the Verdi REQUIEM, Haydn’s MISSA IN TEMPORE BELLI and Mozart’s EXULTATE JUBILATE for ST. MARY’S CATHEDRAL CHOIR in Sydney, in Britten’s SPRING SYMPHONY and the Strauss VIER LETZTE LIEDER for the CANBERRA SCHOOL OF MUSIC, and in the Szymanovsky STABAT MATER, Poulenc GLORIA and Verdi REQUIEM all for the OBERLIN CONSERVATORIUM.  Other performances of the Verdi REQUIEM include with the WA YOUTH ORCHESTRA in Perth.
