Mariana Hong

Mariana Hong (formerly Hyeseoung Kwon) has appeared as Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly for the West Australian Opera in 2025, the West Australian newspaper writing, Mariana Hong a tour-de-force and, her performance was breathtaking, truly magnificent… and Magazine6000 saying, Hong is a splendour. She entirely captivates in her heartbreaking vulnerability, commitment and faith… (her) intensity anchors all three hours’ of runtime.

She will sing Woglinde in Das Rheingold for the Korean National Opera in 2026, replacing the previously planned Die Frau ohne Schatten in which she was originally engaged as Die Färberin.

Most recently she appeared for Opera Australia in the roles of Freia in Das Rheingold and Helmwige in Die Walküre, in the company’s 2023 Brisbane Ring Cycle.

Her recent opera engagements include Madama Butterfly for Finnish National Opera and also for Opera Australia, the State Opera Of South Australia, Opera Queensland, and at the Royal Albert Hall with Raymond Gubbay Productions. 

Her previous roles for Opera Australia have included Liu in Turandot, Mimi in La Boheme,  Pamina  in Die Zauberflöte , Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze Di Figaro,  Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte,  Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Giulietta  in I Capuleti E I Montecchi , Konstanze  in Die Entführung Aus Dem Serail,  both Alcina and Oberto  in Alcina, Sirena in Rinaldo and Dorinda in Orlando, Lauretta  in Gianni Schicchi , Genovieffa in Suor Angelica, Leila in The Pearlfishers, Frasquita and Micaela in Carmen, Nannetta in Falstaff  and Heavenly Being 1 and Soprano Solo in The Pilgrim’s Progress.

Hong has also appeared as Mimi and Liù and as Zerlina in Don Giovanni for Opera Queensland.

Of her London performances as Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfly,  Ldn.Card publication wrote, (Mariana Hong) was making her UK debut and sang with a hypnotic voice.  Her vocal prowess was utterly lavish and bold and did not falter…, while Musicomh said, Her voice is strong and vibrant and she delivers a stirring performance of Un bel di.  

Of her performances as Liu the Sydney Morning Herald has said,  …the most sincere moment comes from Liu… (Mariana Hong) created this role with disarming expressive simplicity, unforced pathos, rich natural colour and fluency., while of her Mimi in La Boheme Opera Opera wrote, The slender and beautiful (Mariana Hong)… her voice is beautifully placed and lit through with grace and intelligence.

On the concert platform her appearances include recitals for Opera Queensland and the Verdi Requiem with Ensemble Apex in Sydney, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, Poulenc’s Gloria and Stabat Mater with conductor, Romano Gandolfi and Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 with Riccardo Chailly in Milan and throughout Italy,  Carmina Burana with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and the Auckland Choral Society and a series of performances as soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 with the KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul conducted by Pietari Inkinen.
