Solothurn – Switzerland

Since 2013 Dieter Kaegi has been Intendant/General Director of THEATER ORCHESTRA BIEL SOLOTHURN in Switzerland.  He is the Co-founder and Artistic Director of the BLACKWATER VALLEY FESTIVAL in Ireland and has held positions at the MONTE CARLO OPERA and DEUTSCHE OPER AM RHEIN.  For twelve years from 1998 he was Artistic Director of OPERA IRELAND and he continues to hold the position of Artistic Director of OPERA IRELAND’s SUMMER OPERA FESTIVAL.

He gained his early experience at OPERNHAUS ZURICH and was assistant to legendary French opera director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle working on his productions for stage and films including the METROPOLITAN OPERA’s televised productions.

Kaegi’s own subsequent directing work includes DER ROSENKAVALIER and DER FREISCHÜTZ in Seattle and Monte Carlo where he also directed acclaimed productions of TRISTAN UND ISOLDE and AIDA.  His further notable productions have included FIDELIO, IDOMENEO and LE NOZZE DI FIGARO in Copenhagen and DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER, GUILLAUME TELL, I MASNADIERI, AIDA and RIGOLETTO for OPÉRA LIÈGE.  For both GRAND THÉÂTRE DE GENÈVA and HOUSTON GRAND OPERA he directed DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL and ROMÉO ET JULIETTE in addition to ANNA BOLENA for OPERA-THÉÂTRE DE METZ as well as DIE LUSTIGE WITWE, BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE and Martinů’s ARIANE for L’OPÉRA DU RHIN and LA FILLE DU REGIMENT for THEATER ST. GALLEN.

Other highlights have included FALSTAFF at the MONTEPULCIANO FESTIVAL, Karetnikov’s TILL EULENSPIEGEL for ANGERS NANTES OPÉRA and CARMEN in Lisbon, also DON GIOVANNI in Washington DC, Wagner’s DAS LIEBESVERBOT for the WEXFORD FESTIVAL and SEMIRAMIDE at the ROSSINI FESTIVAL PESARO, the production also going on to Madrid and Barcelona.

For OPERA IRELAND he directed DON CARLO, LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK. EIN FLORENTISCHE TRAGÖDIE, FALSTAFF, GIANNI SCHICCHI, AIDA and TURANDOT while his productions for BLACKWATER VALLEY OPERA FESTIVAL include CARMEN, DON GIOVANNI, LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, COSI FAN TUTTE and L’ELISIR D’AMORE.

Kaegi’s past 2022/2023 Season at THEATER ORCHESTRA BIEL SOLOTHURN included his production of BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE while 2023/2024 will see him direct I PAGLIACCI .
