Seán O’Boyle

Seán O’Boyle AM, Artist in Residence at Moravian University (USA), was awarded the Order of Australia in 2015 for his outstanding contribution to music. He is a prolific and critically acclaimed composer, conductor, orchestrator, and producer, with a vast output spanning orchestral, jazz, opera, ballet, film, television, and commercial music.

His compositions have been performed or recorded by all the major symphony orchestras in Australia while internationally, O’Boyle’s music has been performed by the Berlin Philharmonic (Germany), Orchestre Symphonique Divertimento (France), Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC Concert Orchestra (UK), Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt (Germany), Belgrade Philharmonic (Serbia), Kaliningrad Symphony (Russia), Malaysian Philharmonic, Auckland Philharmonia and Wellington Orchestra (New Zealand), and numerous North American orchestras including Atlanta, Dallas, Fort Worth, Minnesota, Edmonton, Tacoma, Spartanburg, Concord Chamber Orchestra, and Cincinnati Pops.

His major composing highlights include:

  • Olympia Australis (2000): ABC’s official theme for the Sydney Olympic Broadcast, later reused for the Manchester Commonwealth Games and Athens Olympics.
  • Composer & Artistic Director for the Pasminco Century Mine Opening (2000), collaborating with North Queensland Gulf communities.
  • Concerto for Didgeridoo and Orchestra (2001), co-composed with William Barton – ranked #32 in ABC Classic 100 Concertos and #87 in ABC Classic 100 – 20th Century.
  • Music for Queen Elizabeth II’s CHOGM Opening (2002), used exclusively.
  • Artistic & Music Director for VP60 Gala Concert (2005) and the NRL State of Origin TV Special.
  • Composer/Music Director for the international touring show Scotland the Brave (2005–2015).
  • Composer/Director of major Queensland civic events including the State Library Illumination and King George Square Opening (2006–2009).
  • Orchestrator for The Ashes cricket series (2009), recording with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
  • Composer for numerous Queensland and national festivals including Creative Generation, Brisbane Festival, and Queensland’s 150th.
  • Orchestrator/composer for the ballet Cloudland (2012), and the Requiem premiered by the Glen Ridge Choral Society (2012).
  • Percussion concerto Portraits of Immortal Love for Dame Evelyn Glennie (2014).
  • Rhapsody on a Theme of Mendelssohn (2015) and The Goulburn Concerto (2016).
  • Co-composer and orchestrator of the musical Mimma: A Musical of War and Friendship (2018–2024) with planned BBC Concert Orchestra recording and West End development.
  • Creator of Coronavirus: The Musical Overture (2020) with 112 musicians worldwide, including Dame Evelyn Glennie.
  • Fanfare commissions for Captain Sir Tom Moore and The Duke of Edinburgh (2021); composer of Maps and Journeys for Southern Cross Soloists.
  • Composer of Beerwah premiered by Chris Williams (2021), Bright Motion for Tania Fraser (2022), and the Healing 1 and War Wounds song cycles (2022).
  • USA premiere of Space Encounters with Tulsa Opera (2023).
  • Composer of The Wise Woman for Southern Cross Soloists (2023) and Queensland Ballet (2024) – choreographed by Kristen Olsen, with performances 25 July – 3 August 2024.

He has composed, arranged and produced music for over 150 CDs in collaboration with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). He has worked with renowned artists including Dame Evelyn Glennie, James Morrison AM, The Whitlams, Tommy Emmanuel AM, Kate Ceberano AM, Yvonne Kenny AO, Delta Goodrem, David Hobson amongst many others.

His arrangement of Jerusalem is used by the English National Cricket Team at every Test Match. He composed the broadcast themes for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, and 2004 Athens Olympics.
