Timothy Richards

Berlin – Germany

Timothy Richards’ 2023/2024 season included the role of Max in Der Freischütz for Landestheater Linz and Manrico in Il Trovatore at the Estonian National Opera where he returned in 2025 for the title role of Lohengrin, and also appears as Peter Grimes in 2026.

Also in 2024/2025 he has appeared as Rodolfo in Luisa Miller for Theater Osnabrück and as Ein Italienische Sänger in Der Rosenkavalier at the Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck.

Richards made his professional operatic debut in 1998 as Alfredo in La Traviata for Welsh National Opera.  This subsequently led to invitations to perform in Basel, Innsbruck and Oslo, all early successes which saw him increasingly in demand for the lirico/spinto tenor roles by many of Europe’s leading opera houses.

His engagement as Ein Italienische Sänger in Der Rosenkavalier at the Semperoper Dresden in 1999 marked the beginning of a long and successful association with that opera house which included his debut as Rodolfo in La Bohème the following year to great critical acclaim. Since then Richards has continued to appear regularly at the Semperoper, also at the Staatsoper Berlin, Gran Teatre Del Liceu in Barcelona, National Opera Oslo, Royal Danish Opera, Grand Opera Poznan, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, English National Opera, Komische Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Leipzig, Staatsoper Stuttgart, at Italy’s Spoleto Festival, at Opernfestspiele St Margarethen in Austria amongst others.   He has appeared as Manrico in Il Trovatore at the St. Gallen Festspiele and Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera for Nationaltheater Mannheim, also for Theater Krefeld, Münster and Theater Darmstadt, as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly  at the Summer Opera Festival Eutin and as Luigi in Il Tabarro for the Nordic Song Association in Sweden.  He made his debut, during the 2021/2022 season as Calaf in Turandot for Theater Aachen.

On the concert platform he has been engaged regularly by such presenters as legendary Raymond Gubbay as guest soloist for such events as Classical Spectacular at Royal Albert Hall and for the New Year’s Day Prom at Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Barbican Centre’s New Year’s Eve Gala.  2023 included performances of Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 at the Kölner Philharmonie.
